Poor lose homes as Delhi cleans up

Ahead of Commonwealth Games, India’s capital city resettles slum dwellers in a bid to clean up its image.

Indian authorities plan to make New Delhi completely slum-free as the city prepares to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

It is the slum clearances that some people fear are at odds with one of the mission statements of the Commonwealth Games: “To develop sport for the benefit of the people”.

Residents in New Delhi’s resettlement zones say they have been forced into even worse conditions, with few basic services and no jobs.
