More than 200 masked demonstrators have staged protests in the Canadian city of Vancouver as the 2010 Winter Olympics officially got under way.
Many of the protesters were anti-poverty activists who say that Canada has failed to live up to promises it made to tackle poverty when it bid for the event in 2003.
Al Jazeera’s Cath Turner reports from Vancouver on the Olympic Resistance Network, created with the express intent of disrupting the Winter Games.
