As Southern Sudan prepares to vote next month on seceding from northern Sudan, a major issue is where the border between the two regions would fall.

The border town of Kwek typifies the issues at stake in dividing the country. Rich in oil and fertile farmland, its mixed residents – and the idea of a united Sudan – have become casualties in the national fight over race and land.
