Soviet veteran urges Afghan pullout

Ex-soldier tells Al Jazeera about his many struggles while fighting in Afghanistan in 1980s.

US-led forces have now been in Afghanistan for 3,338 days, the same number of days as the Soviet troops in the 1980s during their unsuccessful occupation of the country.

Afghanistan has been referred to as the ‘Graveyard of Empires’ as it has never been successfully conquered by a foreign army.

Many military veterans who had fought with the Soviet Union’s army against the Mujahideens in Afghanistan have been left with entrenched emotional scars due to the war.

In an exclusive interview, a Russian veteran has told Al Jazeera his heartwrenching account of the Soviet conflict and called on the US-led forces to withdraw from the country.
