Residents halt Jenin clashes
Residents of the West Bank town of Jenin have halted clashes between Fatah’s al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades and Palestinian policemen.
Clashes erupted after Palestinian police opened fire on the car of an al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades leader in Jenin.
Ali al-Sumodi, Aljazeera’s correspondent in the city, said local residents managed to halt armed clashes, which erupted on Monday morning between fighters of the Brigades and members of the Palestinian police and security forces.
In an attempt to resolve the dispute, a high-level meeting between the fighters’ leaders and the Jenin governorate is under way, he added.
Disagreement first cropped up on Sunday between the leader of the Brigades in Jenin, Muhammad Abu Arraj, and some Palestinian policemen.
Vehicle fired upon
Abu Arraj said Palestinian policemen opened fire on his vehicle as he drove by.
The shooting provoked protests from the Brigades’ fighters in the city, leading to armed clashes, the correspondent said.
No casualties have been reported, but there are attempts to resolve the dispute, he added.
