Poultry farm becomes school in war-torn Syria

Amid widespread destruction from Syrian war, pupils in one town have improvised a space to continue their studies.

More than a year ago, residents in the Syrian town of al-Tamanah converted a local poultry farm into a school, which now has about 350 pupils between the first and ninth grades.

Due to a lack of space, the pupils at the poultry farm, which was cleaned out by residents and converted into classrooms, are taught in shifts. Supervisors at the school said constant shelling in the area by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had previously led many pupils to suspend their studies.

Syria’s war, which is nearly into its sixth year, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions more. Political negotiations in Geneva are due to resume next week.
