A number of countries around the world have lit up major landmarks in the French national colours of blue, white and red, following the deadly attacks in Paris which killed at least 128 people.

A state of emergency has been declared across France after armed men, some wearing suicide belts, carried out six separate attacks in the French capital on Friday.

French President Francois Hollande said on Saturday that the attacks in Paris were “an act of war” organised from abroad by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group with internal help.

US President Barack Obama and other world leaders condemned the series of coordinated attacks, while people across the world used social media as a platform to call for peace.
