An elderly man in Myanmar waves as he takes part in the country(***)s first international marathon in decades in Yangon on January 27. Hundreds of runners streamed through Yangon, in another sign of dramatic changes sweeping the country which had been ruled by the military.

Mourners pray during a mass funeral in Fallujah, west of Baghdad. Hundreds of Iraqi protesters gathered in the western city for the funeral of six protesters killed during shootings by army troops.
A jail riot in southwestern Venezuela killed dozens of people on Friday, the latest incident in the ongoing crisis in the South American nation(***)s crowded prisons. Violence broke out after news of an inspection to confiscate weapons at the Centro Occidental jail. Local media reports say between 26 and 54 people were killed and dozens wounded. Cars are caught in a traffic jam during a strike by metro workers in Athens. The ten-day strike, which was called to protest pay cuts, ended after Greece(***)s government issued an emergency order forcing striking employees back to work in an escalating standoff over new austerity measures.
Riot policemen in Azerbaijan detain protestors in central Baku on January 26. Police violently dispersed an unauthorised rally, beating up and arresting scores of people. Several dozen protesters briefly gathered in Baku(***)s central Sahil square to protest against the police using excessive force against peaceful protests.

Spain(***)s unemployment rate soared to its highest level since measurements began in the 1970s as a prolonged recession and deep spending cuts left almost 6 million people out of work at the end of last year.
