At least 12 people are feared to have died after a two-storey hotel collapsed in the southern Indian city of Secunderabad on Monday.

“Twelve people were killed and 18 injured when the City Light Hotel collapsed early this morning, the building owner’s son was among those killed.” private TV channel NDTV said.

Police said more people were feared trapped in the debris of the hotel.

Rescue workers were searching through tonnes of rubble, as family members of the hotel workers waited at the site for news. Three people are still trapped under debris, according to NDTV.

One local official said there were several old buildings in the area and that owners had been notified about their safety condition, but the 80-year-old hotel wasn’t among these. This was because the building looked fine from outside, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Commissioner Krishna Babu told NDTV.

Several buildings have collapsed in India in recent months, many of them apartment blocks in the financial capital Mumbai, including one in April that killed 74 people.
