Mending Minds – Part 2

Liberian Dr Janice Cooper, a Harvard-trained expert in mental health, is spearheading a project run by US charity The Carter Center to train 150 nurses and physician assistants in mental health by 2015.

Since the project started in 2010, 100 clinicians have been trained, and all 15 of the West African state’s counties now have at least one trained mental health clinician.

The initiative, run in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, will also see a further 300 mental health professionals, such as community health workers, trained.

Reporter Sharita Hutton travels to a clinic and refugee camp to meet some of the course’s graduates and to find out how lives have been transformed by improved mental health services.
