US weakens endangered species’ protection for oil companies

Environmentalists say polar bears and arctic seals could be among those at risk from the new regulations.

A sweeping overhaul of the US Endangered Species Act has been finalised by the Trump administration. It is likely to clear the way for new mining, and oil and gas drilling.

The Act of the 1970s is credited with bringing several iconic species back from the brink of extinction.
