Liamine Zeroual ‘asked to lead’ Algeria’s transitional government

The former president of Algeria says he was offered position a day after Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his resignation.

A day after Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said he would step down later this month, one of his predecessors, Liamine Zeroual, has claimed he was asked to lead a transitional government.

Zeroual was president of the North African country from 1994 to 1999.

His claim is the latest development after weeks of protests in Algeria demanding Bouteflika leave office.
