Political tension in Mauritania amid return of former leader

Fears of a serious escalation increased after the arrest of the commander of the presidential guard and his deputy, both loyalists of former President Abdul Aziz.

Fears are mounting in the West African nation of Mauritania that hard-earned democratic gains might be reversed.

They follow a sudden dispute between two former army generals – President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and his predecessor Mohamed Ould Abdul Aziz.
