Malaysia’s rising illegal plastic recycling factories

The plastics processing industry in Malaysia is worth an estimated $840m, but not all of the imported plastics can be recycled and will end up in landfills, at huge financial and environmental costs.

Malaysia is fast becoming the top destination for plastic waste exported from other countries.

It is a booming industry, but an increase in the number of illegal recycling plants is already causing environmental hazards and not all of the waste can be recycled, leaving Malaysia to find a way to dispose of it.
