New York dedicates New Year’s Eve ball drop to press freedom

Thousands braved rain and cold to pack Times Square for a string of star performances and traditional crystal ball drop.

Braving freezing cold and rain, thousands of people gathered at New York’s Times Square to ring in the New Year.

In a gesture highlighting the importance of journalism and press freedom, the organisers invited journalists for the traditional lowering of the crystal ball.
