India: Poverty and child malnutrition rife in West Singhbhum

This remote part of eastern India’s Jharkhand state where many tribal people live is rich in natural resources. Yet its people are some of the poorest in the country.

Poverty is still a major concern in India, despite the country’s recent economic growth.

The West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand state is one of the poorest constituencies.

A recent report by public health researchers there says at least two-thirds of children under the age of five are malnourished and underweight.
