Football diplomacy: Russia praised as World Cup host

The friendly face of Russia has been on display for the past month, during football’s World Cup.

Hosting a World Cup has not erased Russia’s authoritarianism, human rights issues or a fragile economy.

But for a while, at least, it’s allowed Russia to feel positive about itself, without the usual undercurrent of confrontation.

The showpiece event is proving a winner for the country and President Vladimir Putin.
