Palestine: Unregulated tobacco industry on the rise

With high unemployment in the occupied West Bank, Palestinians are turning to the informal tobacco market, in which the required water – restricted by Israel – to cultivate is low and demand is high.

Palestinian farmers have grown tobacco for generations, but as jobs have dried up more and more people have turned to working in the unregulated industry.

The Palestinian Authority says it is missing out on millions of dollars of tax revenue every month.
