Poverty in Iraq among major issues in election campaigns

Iraq’s politicians maintain optimism, but with poverty increasing and suspicions of government rampant, many Iraqi voters are sceptical about the upcoming general election creating any real change.

Iraqis are due to vote on Sunday in the first general election since the rise and fall of ISIL.

The increasing poverty rate is among the campaign issues.

Years of war and political instability have left communities in ruins, and the oil-dependent economy is in decline.

But many Iraqis doubt the election will lead to changes they desire.
