Nicaragua: Deadly crackdown on protests fuels further unrest

The death toll after more than a month of unrest reaches 84 as dissidents increasingly resort to riots and violence.

Another person has been killed in violence in Nicaragua, taking the number of dead in more than a month of anti-government unrest to 84. Anger at social security reforms quickly morphed into calls for President Daniel Ortega and his wife to step aside.

And the government’s tough response appears to also be alienating some of Ortega’s staunchest supporters.
