Kenya’s first Cannes-nominated film banned at home
Wanuri Kahiu’s film Rafiki has been announced as Kenya’s first entry at the Cannes Film Festival.
For the first time in the 71 years of the Cannes Film Festival, Kenya has an entry.
The film Rafiki, which means “friend” in Swahili, is a love story set in Nairobi.
It offers a different perspective on Africa, but the film has already been banned in Kenya and the director threatened with arrest.
