Burundi attack: Funerals held for victims ahead of referendum

Timing of referendum aimed at making sure that its president stays in power beyond present constitutional limits has come under criticism by human rights groups.

Human rights groups say they do not think a referendum in Burundi on Thursday to extend the president’s rule can take place in a free and fair climate.

There have been sporadic incidents of violence and abductions.

Last week 26 people were killed, 11 of them children, in an attack on one village.
