Abbas seeks alternative to US as peace mediator

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to call for an alternative to US-mediated negotiations with Israel during his address to the United Nations Security Council, officials say.

The Palestinian president is expected to tell the UN Security Council on Tuesday that he wants to set up a new international alliance to mediate with the Israelis.

Mahmoud Abbas is abandoning a quarter-of-a-century old policy of accepting the US as the main intermediary.

It follows US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
