US President Donald Trump has been defending his decision to withdraw all US troops from Syria, and end an air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

The announcement alarmed Washington’s allies and Kurdish fighters in Syria who fear it will allow ISIL to regroup. Trump says it’s time for other countries to step in.
