Nicaragua pushes to silence critics amid US sanctions threat

A tense calm returns to Nicaragua, but the anger that sparked months of protests is still hanging in the air.

Attacks on government critics and the media have become commonplace in Nicaragua since peaceful protests started in April.

The political crisis has sparked the worst violence the Central American country has seen since a military dictatorship was overthrown 40 years ago.

Amid the crisis, the threat of sanctions by the United States for alleged human rights violations looms large.
