Argentina’s Senate discusses austerity budget for 2019

Despite protests against austerity measures, the budget is likely to be approved.

The Argentine Senate – the upper house of Argentina’s National Congress – has started discussions on the government’s 2019 budget, which includes tax hikes, expenditure cuts and other austerity measures.

The lower house – the Chamber of Deputies – had on October 25 passed the unpopular austerity budget, designed to meet the stiff requirements of a $57bn International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, amid unrest as demonstrators staged violent protests outside the legislature building.

The government is trying to stave off an economic crisis with help from the IMF.

Despite protests against these austerity measures, the budget is likely to be approved.
