Argentina’s Senate discusses austerity budget for 2019
Despite protests against austerity measures, the budget is likely to be approved.
The Argentine Senate – the upper house of Argentina’s National Congress – has started discussions on the government’s 2019 budget, which includes tax hikes, expenditure cuts and other austerity measures.
The lower house – the Chamber of Deputies – had on October 25 passed the unpopular austerity budget, designed to meet the stiff requirements of a $57bn International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, amid unrest as demonstrators staged violent protests outside the legislature building.
