Mexico remittances: Transfers from US hit record high
Mexicans living in the US have always sent money home to help their families out. In 2017, these remittances totalled more than Mexico’s total exports.
Mexicans living in the US are sending home record amounts of money, as concern grows over the government’s immigration crackdown.
Last year they transferred $26bn – providing a vital lifeline to some of Mexico‘s poorest communities.
Al Jazeera’s Manuel Rapalo visited one such community in the southern Mexican city of Oaxaca.
