New Italy government wins crucial confidence vote

The new Italian anti-establishment government has won its first trust vote in the upper house Senate after Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte had presented his coalition’s agenda of tax cuts and higher welfare spending.

Italy‘s new ruling coalition has won a crucial trust vote in the upper chamber of parliament.

The alliance of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) and the right-wing League party will now seek support in the lower house where it has a majority.

A win there will empower the government, led by political unknown Giuseppe Conte, to carry out its anti-immigration agenda.
