The United Nations is calling on provincial Iraqi government leaders to stop Shia Muslim militias from blocking thousands of Sunni families trying to return home.

Some displaced people in northern Iraq accuse militias of trying to extort money from them.

Shia-led forces regained control of the town of Jurf al-Sakhar from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group two years ago.

But many residents continue to live with uncertainty.
