HIV in Africa: Young women and children bear burden
Africa is facing a new health crisis as HIV-positive children enter adolescence and become sexually active, raising fears that without proper education, the epidemic could spread even further.
The United Nations Aids agency is urging African countries to protect young women and children.
It says they are bearing the brunt of the continent’s Aids epidemic.
More than half a million children up to the age of 15 in West and Central Africa are believed to be infected with the virus.
The call was made at a conference on HIV and Aids, which is under way in the Ivory Coast.
