Robert Mugabe’s days of exercising unchallenged power are over.

After 37 years of deftly outmanoeuvring potential rivals and maintaining his control of Zimbabwe, Mugabe found it hard to let go.

He had successfully removed other political opponents in the past, but his efforts to remove Emmerson Mnangagwa to clear the way for his wife, Grace, went too far and upset the military.
