Catalonia‘s deposed leader Carles Puigdemont is calling for democratic and peaceful opposition to the Spanish government’s direct rule of the region.

Madrid stripped Catalonia of its autonomy and dissolved the regional parliament after Barcelona declared independence on Friday, and Spain’s prosecutor general is preparing to announce charges against former President Puigdemont.

It is a crisis that has divided Spain, as well as Catalans themselves.
