The vote was widely seen as a referendum on Macri and his pro-market economic reforms.
The result gives the president a boost if he decides to stand for a second term in presidential elections in two years time. Meanwhile, Argentina’s former president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, returned to the political fray, winning a seat in the Senate.
