China’s Muslim Uighurs look to cash in on ‘New Silk Road’

Chinese officials say the country’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative will start a new wave of globalisation, bringing prosperity to all those involved.

Chinese officials say the country’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative will start a new wave of globalisation, bringing prosperity to all those involved.

The government is also hoping the “New Silk Road” could give an economic boost to one of China’s most troubled areas and put an end to what it sees as a security threat from the ethnic Muslim minority Uighur group.

The Uighurs have long complained of discrimination by the country’s majority Han Chinese.
