The trial of Desi Bouterse, former military ruler of Suriname resumed on Friday. Bouterse, who is running in next year’s presidential elections faces murder charges for executing 15 political opponents in December 1982.
Bouterese has played a leading role in the tumultuous history of his country since it gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975.
