Barack Obama, the US president, has signed a $787bn economic stimulus package that could give a major boost to New York senator David Paterson’s efforts to close the $13bn deficit in his budget.
New York’s slice of the stimulus pie will provide more than $24bn to New York to avoid lay-offs and tax increases.
