Russia has recognised Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states.
The action is likely to inflame tensions with the West, but Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s president, told Al Jazeera’s Jonah Hull that he has no intention of beginning a new Cold War.
