After almost 50 years of communist rule, Albania’s transition to democracy caused massive socio-economic upheaval.

Criminal networks soon made use of Albania’s geographic location as a gateway into Western Europe to traffic drugs, weapons and people.

However, in 2001, the UN assisted the Albanian government in launching a national strategy against human trafficking.

Citizen reporter Estela Ziu talks to Ana who describes her experiences as a victim of human trafficking.
