Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, has arrived in Baghdad to transfer command from General David Petraeus to Lieutenant-General Ray Odierno.
Gates says the number of US troops in Iraq will be reduced, and the challenge for Odierno is to maintain the gains made by the US to date.
