Leaders from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities are to meet to consider starting negotiations to reunify the island.

The talks would end a four-year deadlock following the rejection of a UN-brokered deal by the Greek Cypriots.

The divide has gripped the island for 34 years. This is a critical moment after decades of dispute over who controls the northern side.

Al Jazeera’s Hamish MacDonald reports from northern Cyprus where he meets the last remaining Greek community under Turkish control.
