Who are astrology’s new influencers?
Investors see opportunity where the stars and technology align.
It’s unclear when human beings started looking up at the stars and planets for guidance, solace or comfort. Perhaps astrology is as old as humanity itself. But something a lot newer – The Digital Age – has kickstarted a global astrology boom.
It was in the Ancient Greek period that the 12 star signs of the zodiac, as we know them today, were set down. Interpreting the zodiac grew in popularity during the New Age movements of the 1960s and 1970s. And, a few decades later, astrology has gone from a niche concern, and a few lines scribbled in the Sunday paper, to YouTube channels and Twitter and Instagram accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers.
Over the last five years, millennials and Gen X’ers are engaging with the practice to a degree not seen before. Astrologers, and investors, are seeing opportunity where the stars and technology align. According to one venture capitalist, the market is now worth over US $2 billion.
Astrology, of course, is not a science and there is no evidence that zodiac signs correlate to personality, but technology and social media have created a whole new brand of celebrity – and a growing band of true believers. We’ll chat about the stars, the planets and the tech behind it all with some of astrology’s biggest influencers.
