Insults hurled at athlete after SEA Games rejects gender test
Philippines fails in bid to get Manganang’s gender tested ahead of volleyball game.
Volleyball fans online are putting the spotlight on a 23-year-old player and questioning her gender. Ahead of Wednesday’s game in women’s volleyball in Singapore, the Philippines’ team demanded the South East Asian (SEA) Games organisers carry out a gender test on Indonesia’s Aprilia Santini Manganang.
Filipino coach Roger Gorayeb singled out Manganang for her physique. But Indonesia’s coach Hanny Sidik Surkatty noted that Manganang has competed in international events before and her eligibility has never been in question.
Organisers decided not to conduct the test and Manganang was allowed to play. But that has not stopped people on social media from discussing her gender.
