
Indians speak out against groups’ plan to celebrate man who killed Gandhi
Facebook campaign calls for “Selfies Against Hate” in response to plan.
Indian Facebook users are protesting one group’s plan to erect a statue of Nathuram Godse, the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.
On Friday, Indian police prevented members of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha from installing a sculpture of Godse in the city of Meerut on the 67th anniversary of the assassination. The group celebrates Godse’s act because they believe Gandhi was largely responsible for India’s partition.
An online campaign called “India Against Hate” responded by calling on Indians to post selfies to their Facebook page in order to protest the group’s plans.
Many added their photos, along with the hashtags #No2Godse and #No2Hate:
