
Did China’s first lady get around Instagram censorship?
Peng Liyuan reportedly uploads image after the service was allegedly blocked amid #OccupyCentral protests.
Despite the reported Chinese ban on the popular photo-sharing service, Instagram, the country’s first lady, Peng Liyuan, has continued to use the app.
Liyuan posted the photo above to what is described as her official Instagram account on Sunday after numerous reports indicated the service had been blocked in China.
The account, with more than 20,000 followers, cannot be independently verified by The Stream. In the comments section of the image, some users asked if a VPN had been used to access the service.
Tens of thousands of protesters in Hong Kong have taken to the streets to demand the Chinese government grant them free elections. In response, the Chinese government has increased censorship throughout the country. According to Weiboscope, an analytics project run by the University of Hong Kong, Sunday was the most censored day of the year in China.
