Egypt ‘gay wedding’ trial condemned by LGBT supporters
Gay rights defenders say trial of eight men for alleged same-sex marriage is an attack on Egypt’s gay community.
Activists in Egypt are taking to social media to protest what they say is the targeting of people because of their sexual orientation.
On Tuesday, eight men stood in court to face accusations of taking part in a “gay wedding”, after video of the alleged ceremony emerged on YouTube. It appears to show two men exchanging rings, but one of the men reportedly says it was a birthday party, not a same-sex marriage.
Although homosexuality itself is not explicitly illegal under Egyptian law, they could face more than three years in prison for “violating public decency”.
