New Zealand PM calls Kim DotCom the ‘sugar daddy’ of female politician

John Key dismisses accusations of sexism after statement made about Internet Party leader Laila Harre.

Prime Minister John Key is standing by use of the term “sugar daddy” to describe a female party leader’s political relationship with entrepreneur Kim DotCom. In a radio interview, Key called out Internet Party Laila Harre, saying she was grandstanding on behalf of her “sugar daddy”.

Harre called the comment “over the top, offensive [and] sexist”, but in an interview on Wednesday, Key said he thought the description of DotCom was “totally accurate”. He added, “If he wasn’t putting up the money, she wouldn’t be there.”

Following Key’s comments, Kim DotCom appeared to dispute the term on Twitter:
