Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the Tunisian president who came to power in 1987, has since led one of the most economically stable countries in the region.
His co-operation in fighting the ‘war on terror’ and emphasis on women’s rights have won praise from Western governments.
But as People & Power discovers, Tunisia’s polices towards its press and political dissenters do not quite reflect the liberal image it has in the West and Ben Ali has been accused of using torture against opposition activists.
This episode of People & Power aired from 17 June 2007
