The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, is calling on the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs the occupied West Bank, to end its pressure tactics on Gaza, a Hamas-ruled Palestinian territory. Maurer was visiting Gaza before meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

He said the PA's squeeze on salaries and electricity was taking an "unacceptable toll" on civilians in the territory, which also suffers from an Israeli blockade.
