    Syrian state media says government forces have retaken areas near the capital Damascus that were seized by opposition fighters on Sunday.

    Fierce fighting took place throughout the day on Monday in opposition-held areas east of Damascus as Syrian government forces pounded the area with jets and artillery.

     

    Al Jazeera's Imtiaz Tyab reports from Beirut.
