Yemen’s one-horse presidential race

Abd-Rabbu Hadi, vice-president, is running unopposed as part of a Gulf deal to ease out President Saleh.

Yemen''s Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi

Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Yemen’s vice-president, has officially launched his campaign for the country’s top office. He is also the only candidate in the running.

Hadi’s candidacy is part of a deal brokered between Yemen, the US and Gulf states to transfer power from President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has led Yemen for 33 years.

But some leaders fear problems ahead. Abdulwahhab Al Anesi, the leader of the Islamist Islah Party, says elements of Saleh’s regime are still trying to destabilise the transition.
